Team Abangers at Ang Estilong Trumpo

2020. Illustration. Letterring

My entries to Ang Illustrador ng Kabataan’s open call. These are based on the story by by Boon Kristoffer Lauw.

These are my take on cover and chapter illustrations based on the novel “Team Abangers at ang Estilong Trumpo” by Boon Kristoffer Lauw. The novel revolves on Tala, a young orphan from House of Hope who plans to join the Philippine’s Palarong Pambansa – Laro ng Lahi so that she can be found by her long lost parents. The novel features a lot of Philippine games, with twists from the children’s creativity.

Cover featuring Tala and Goy-goy and their special move in the action-packed final chapter. I hand-lettered the title.
(Tala means star in Tagalog)

Chapter illustration of Tala and the girls playing Doctor quak-quak. This game requires the players to hold hands, shuffle and tangle themselves into knots without breaking their chain. When they are done, they call Doctor quack-quack, the person tagged It to untangle them back to their original positions.

Chapter illustration of Tala and Kat playing jackstones. This game has two components-the bouncy ball and the pieces to collect called “stars”. Jackstones was one of my favorite games as a kid, and I had so much fun illustrating this chapter!
