To Great Beginnings

2016. Illustration. Letttering.

As a challenge during my internship with Inksurge, I was tasked to create a poster on coffee, as inspired by vintage travel posters

“Here’s to great beginnings, from bean to cup”

Inksurge is a highly caffeine-driven studio (They don’t dub themselves as “Brewed Rebels” for nothing). Coffee jumpstarts and fuels their day. As a yearly challenge for their interns, I was tasked to create illustrations set on a coffee plantation, as inspired by vintage travel posters.

Growing up, one particular local coffee commercial was ingrained in my mind. It asks, “Para kanino ka bumabangon?”  (Roughly translates to: “For whom do you get up in the morning?) As such, the moment “coffee plantation” was even mentioned the image of drinking coffee while watching the sunrise immediately came to mind.

This was particularly a challenge for me because it was my first time doing a large scale illustration digitally. As a travel poster, backgrounds, composition and type were also very important. I love working with traditional media, and I worked that into this illustration through the use of textures. I’ve also started growing an interest in lettering and calligraphy, and as to fit into this poster’s treatment, I did hand-drawn lettering for the copy.

All in all, this piece is a culmination of things I knew I was weak at and new things I wanted to try, and I learned and grew so much from it. As such, “Here’s to new beginnings”
